What is Vaginitis

Vaginitis is a general term used to describe inflammation or irritation of the vagina. It is a common condition that can cause discomfort, changes in vaginal discharge, itching, burning, or irritation. Several different causes can lead to vaginitis, and treatment depends on the underlying reason.

Types and Causes of Vaginitis

  • Yeast infection (candidiasis): Caused by an overgrowth of Candida fungus, leading to thick white discharge, itching, and irritation.
  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV): Results from an imbalance in normal vaginal bacteria, often causing a thin, grayish discharge with a fishy odor.
  • Trichomoniasis: A sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite, which may cause frothy yellow-green discharge and discomfort.
  • Irritant or allergic vaginitis: Triggered by reactions to soaps, lotions, douches, or hygiene products.
  • Hormonal vaginitis (atrophic vaginitis): Common after menopause due to decreased estrogen levels, leading to dryness, irritation, or burning.

Common Symptoms

  • Unusual vaginal discharge (color, texture, or odor changes)
  • Vaginal itching or irritation
  • Burning sensation with urination
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse

When to Seek Care

Because vaginitis has several possible causes, it is important not to self-treat without knowing the source of your symptoms. Some infections can mimic others, and treatment differs. A physician can perform an examination and, if needed, lab testing to determine the cause and recommend the right treatment.
