Ultrasound, or sonography, uses sound waves to create images of your baby. It is safe, non-invasive, and an important part of prenatal care.

Types of ultrasound include:

  • Standard ultrasound: Confirms pregnancy, estimates gestational age, checks baby’s growth and position, detects birth defects, and monitors overall health.
  • Limited ultrasound: Performed for a specific concern, such as checking baby’s position.
  • 3D/advanced ultrasound: Provides more detail if there are concerns about abnormalities.

Ultrasounds are often done around 10–12 weeks and again at 18–20 weeks, though additional scans may be recommended depending on your pregnancy.
