Acute and Chronic Pelvic Pain Evaluation
Pelvic pain is a common concern for many women and can affect daily activities, quality of life, and reproductive health. At Care First Women’s Health, we provide thorough evaluation and management for both acute pelvic pain (sudden or severe pain) and chronic pelvic pain (lasting more than 6 months).
Acute Pelvic Pain
Acute pelvic pain develops suddenly and often requires prompt evaluation. Common causes may include:
- Ovarian cysts or rupture
- Pelvic infection
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Appendicitis or gastrointestinal conditions
- Urinary tract infection or kidney stones
Because some causes may be urgent, timely medical evaluation is important.
Chronic Pelvic Pain
Chronic pelvic pain is persistent pain in the pelvic region that lasts for months or longer. It may be constant or come and go. Possible causes include:
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Pelvic adhesions (scar tissue)
- Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or bladder pain syndrome
- Past infections or prior surgeries
Chronic pain can be complex, and often more than one factor contributes to symptoms.
What to Expect During an Evaluation
Your doctor will start by reviewing your medical history and symptoms in detail. Depending on your situation, evaluation may include:
- Physical exam and pelvic exam
- Laboratory tests to check for infection or other conditions
- Ultrasound or other imaging to look at the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures
- Diagnostic procedures, such as laparoscopy, in selected cases
Management and Care
Treatment depends on the cause of pain and your personal needs. Options may include:
- Medications to treat infection, regulate hormones, or relieve pain
- Physical therapy for pelvic floor disorders
- Minimally invasive procedures or surgery when needed
- Coordinated care with other specialists if conditions outside the reproductive system are involved
