Fertility Evaluation
A fertility evaluation may be recommended if pregnancy has not occurred after a period of trying, or if there are known reproductive or health concerns.
Evaluation may be suggested if:
- You are under 35 and have been trying for 12 months without success
- You are 35 or older and have been trying for 6 months without success
- You have irregular or absent periods, endometriosis, pelvic infections, PCOS, or multiple miscarriages
What a fertility evaluation may include:
- Medical history and exam – reviewing menstrual cycles, medical conditions, past pregnancies, surgeries, and lifestyle factors
- Hormone and ovulation testing - blood tests to confirm if ovulation is occurring and to measure reproductive hormone levels
- Imaging tests – ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries; tests such as hysterosalpingography (HSG) or sonohysterography to check if the fallopian tubes are open
- Other procedures – such as hysteroscopy or laparoscopy if endometriosis, scar tissue, or uterine abnormalities are suspected
After the evaluation, your doctor will discuss the results and recommend next steps. These may include lifestyle changes, medications to help ovulation, surgery to correct structural issues, or assisted reproductive treatments like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is also important to evaluate the male partner, since fertility concerns can involve both partners.
Why Pre-Pregnancy Care Matters
Taking steps before pregnancy can:
- Reduce the risk of complications during pregnancy
- Improve fertility and the chances of conception
- Support the health of both parent and baby
- Provide emotional reassurance and preparedness
